1. The healthcare system can be particularly challenging for 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals, who may face discrimination from healthcare providers or have unique healthcare needs, such as access to Hormone replacement therapy and gender-affirming surgeries. What steps would you take to improve the healthcare experiences of 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals in our province?

Alberta Liberals support expanding access to hormone replacement therapy and gender-affirming surgeries. To improve the experience of 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals we would consult with the community to identify key concerns and strategies to address those concerns.

  1. Schools can be a challenging environment for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth, who may face bullying and discrimination. What specific policies would you support to make schools safer and more welcoming for all students, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity?

Our platform includes a commitment to increase education spending annually by $1.2 billion. That includes expanding mental health resources and the number of support staff in schools. We also support updates to the curriculum to make it more inclusive. With an improved curriculum and a better-resourced education system, educators will be able to better address bullying within the school system.

  1. Research has shown that transgender youth are at a higher risk of experiencing abuse and rejection from their families, which can lead to negative outcomes such as homelessness, mental health issues, and suicide. What policies would you support to ensure that transgender youth have access to safe and supportive housing options and resources to help them if they are experiencing abuse or rejection from their families?

Our party would expand access to supportive housing programs, both run by the government and by trusted non-profits. We have committed to $600 million more in annual funding for mental health programs.

  1. Universal Basic Income has been proposed as a potential solution to address income inequality and poverty. Research has shown that UBI can have significant benefits for marginalized communities, including the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, which may face higher rates of poverty and discrimination. What policies would you support to implement UBI, and how do you believe it could specifically benefit the 2SLGBTQIA+ community in terms of reducing poverty, improving mental health outcomes, and promoting social inclusion?

The Alberta Liberals support the creation of a Universal Basic Income pilot program in Alberta. We believe a UBI has the potential to efficiently and effectively address poverty and inequality, benefiting marginalized Albertans most of all. A pilot program would allow us to gather important data and what next steps would need to be taken to may a UBI feasible for all of Alberta.
